Singapore President Visits Puat Belia; PKBN Members Show Physical Prowess

Bandar Seri Begawan - The trainees of Brunei's National Service Programme or Program Khidmat Bakti Negara (PKBN) yesterday proudly showcased their physical prowess, Including acrobatic capabilities, during a Visit by Singapore President Dr Tony Tan Keng Yam and his wife Mrs Mary Tan to Pusat Belia (Youth Centre) in Bandar Seri Begawan.
Also present yesterday were Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Hj Awg Abu Bakar bin Hj Apong, the Minister of Education, and Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Setia Awg Hj Yahya bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar, the Minister of Industry and Primary Resources.
The PKBN members put on a great show, which became the highlight of the Singaporean President's visit to Pusat Belia.
The PKBN programme covers patriotism, self and spiritual developmentalongwith discipline andphysical training as well as entrepreneurship and community service.
The showcase during President Dr Tony Tan's visit had three main parts, which were drill, Silat or martial arts, and physical training.
The drill is a key curriculum in the PKBN's discipline and physical training component.
It disciplines the trainees, while training them to have more endurance, both physically and mentally, and to come together as one.
Furthermore, it is also crucial towards establishing highly disciplined members who are responsible, respectable, obedient and exemplary.
This curriculum is run and taught by qualified trainers.
Silat or martial arts is also embodied in the discipline and physical training component.
Martial arts that are taught to the trainees of the third intake consist of Seni Cekak Asli and Kuntau.
Among the aims is to produce efficient trainees, who are alert and courageous with self-defence skills and who can master the martial arts.
Furthermore, it teaches the PKBN members to be polite and well-mannered.

Another purpose would be to preserve the heritage from extinction, especially among the youths.
Physical training is another activity that is embodied in the discipline and physical training component.
It is designed to improve and enhance physical and mental endurance, as well as discipline and self-confidence.
Such activities call for speed, intelligence and balance, which enhance the skills of trainees.
After the demonstration, the Singapore President and spouse had a meet-and-greet session with the PKBN members.
Prior to the demonstrations by the PKBN trainees, the Singaporean president also had a tour of Pusat Belia, where he also met with local youths.
